Trying New Hobbies in Your 20’s
Try Something New!
One of the biggest goals I set for myself in 2024 was to explore and incorporate new hobbies into my life. Prior to this year, I was so focused on external factors that I lacked the ability to prioritize myself and my own interests. In order to change that, I decided to focus on implementing more hobbies into my life. Hobbies are an excellent way to connect with yourself and tune into the creative side of your mind and soul. Over the past year I have tried numerous different hobbies. Throughout this blog post I am going to review hobbies that I have tried. Hopefully this can inspire you to try something new this year, too!
Reading
I started off the year by reintroducing reading into my life. When I was growing up, I used to love to read, but somewhere along the way it got left behind. Last year I started reading several different self help books, but I was also seeking to incorporate some “fun” reads, too. I recently got the libby app (online library) and it has truly changed my life! I have read almost 20 books this year which is crazy in comparison to the past few years of my life where I read about zero. I also feel as if reading has increased my attention span, and acted as a much healthier alternative to scrolling on social media every night before bed!
Fitness Classes: Spin / Pilates
Another hobby that I have heavily implemented into my life is partaking in fitness classes. I moved to a new state at the beginning of 2024 and wanted to push myself to take advantage of all of the fitness classes available near me. I started by taking spin classes and absolutely fell in love with it. I grew up dancing, so going to the gym and weight lifting has always been boring to me. I was never able to stick to a consistent workout schedule because I genuinely did not enjoy strength training. Going to spin and implementing pilates truly changed my life in regards to setting a consistent workout routine. If you are in a similar position and grew up participating in a sport like dance or cheer, I highly recommend trying out different fitness classes!
Scrapbooking
Another fun hobby that I began this year is scrapbooking! I take so many photos on my phone and never look at them again because they get lost in my camera roll. I wanted to have a physical scrapbook that I could look back on and reminisce about all of the fun things that I accomplished throughout the year. Another alternative to scrapbooking is making a digital version of a scrapbook. There are a lot of different apps that offer displays to use for all of your favorite photos! This is a great option if you are looking to save money, but still wanting a visual compilation of your photos and memories.
Baking
Baking is one hobby that I have always found challenging. My grandma has always been an excellent baker, but I think I may have missed out on that gene. I wanted to learn how to bake more this year because I love being able to make something and share it with my family and friends. I started by trying to make my own sourdough and sourdough starter. It can be difficult to stay consistent with it, especially if you have a busy schedule, because of how time consuming it can be. I have since switched to simpler baked goods and have found it to be fun and relaxing! I love trying new recipes and we plan on hosting a virtual baking event soon!
Running
Like everyone else on the internet, I decided to try out running this year. I started out strong and genuinely thought that it could be something that I implement into my life for the long-run (hehe). However, after a few weeks, I quickly learned that running was not meant for me. Like I mentioned before, I grew up dancing which has altered my perspective when performing various different work outs. Similar to strength training, I found running to be so boring. Whether I was running at a park or the beach, no amount of music or mental toughness was going to convince me that I enjoyed running. I didn’t have the desire to push myself on long runs when I could complete just as good of a workout taking spin classes. What I learned from this experience was that it is okay to quit something when it is not working for you. Just because running is a great hobby for a lot of people, doesn’t mean that it has to be for me.
To Sum it All Up…
There are so many hobbies out there to choose from. The most important thing is that you are connected with yourself and reflecting on what activities best serve you. If you work a task based job like me, connecting with creative hobbies will open up a whole new world! I am already planning which new hobbies I want to implement into my life next year and will keep you updated on my journey of self exploration!
